The front passenger seat folds flat, and like the Malibu Maxx, the clever rear 60/40 folding seat can be slid on its tracks 5 cm forward and 15 cm back, giving the option of more legroom or more cargo space. The Equinox’s interior is roomy and practical, although the seats are hard. The electric-assist steering gains needed resistance on the highway, but it’s vague at lower speeds, often to the point that the steering wheel doesn’t feel connected. The Equinox rides like a big car, soft and almost wallowy. It’s basically meant for urban off-roading: snowy streets, or a gravel path to the cottage. The AWD system is ‘torque on demand’, powering the front wheels until they slip, whereupon it sends torque to the rear. The Equinox comes solely with a 3.4-litre V6 and five-speed automatic transmission, and is available in front- or all-wheel drive. It’s built on GM’s Theta platform, which it shares with the Saturn Vue and Pontiac Torrent. There’s also a price break from 2005: LS models are down by $1,240, LT models by $1,080.Īlthough Chevrolet bills the Equinox as a compact SUV, it’s really quite large, with an overall length only 77 mm shorter than a Trailblazer. Two new exterior colours join the palette: Black Amethyst Metallic and Bermuda Green Metallic. The rear cargo panel has been removed for increased cargo capacity, and the rear head restraints are now smaller, for improved rearward visibility. There’s a revised shifter knob and HVAC controls available heated seats with the cloth interior a body-coloured front fascia on the LS model body-coloured outside mirrors on the LT and enhanced door trim panels. Our biggest complaints with the 2005 models had to do with interior materials. An all-new model in 2005, the Equinox rolls into 2006 with only minor cosmetic changes. Also, interior changes have been made for 2006 to improve the appearance and function of the cabin. However, the 2006 models do come standard with anti-lock brakes, cruise control, and other features, which wasn't the case last year. Like the CR-V, RAV4, and Escape, Equinox is based on a passenger car design.Įquinox was launched as a 2005 model so there aren't any major changes for 2006. It long wheelbase gives the Equinox good stability and ride quality. However, Equinox only seats five because it does not offer a hopelessly cramped third row as the new RAV4 does. Fold the rear seats down, then fold down the front passenger seatback down, and you can load eight-foot objects inside. The rear seatbacks also recline for additional comfort. Slide the seats rearward for more rear legroom. Slide forward and you have more cargo space. The back seats are mounted on tracks and slide fore and aft. It's nearly 14 inches longer than the Ford Escape and just three inches shorter than a Chevy TrailBlazer.Īs a result, the Equinox is roomier than other compact SUVs, and has features that enhance its versatility. Equinox is big enough that its dimensions blur the line between compact and midsize sport utilities. It's bigger than each of them (including the all-new 2006 RAV4). The Chevy Equinox is Chevrolet's answer to the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.
